About Yusuhara Town
It may come as a surprise that there is a town like this in Japan
Thatched houses, and a bush warbler is calling, ho-ho-ke-kyo!
Clearly, it’s a peaceful place.If you walk around the town, you’ll see works designed by a world-famous Japanese architect. He says this town was his starting point.
If you venture into the mountains there is a road via which some of the heroes of Japanese history escaped the Tosa domain, and who later took part in the political revolution that took place at the end of the 19th Century (the Meiji Restoration). Forest bathing via the promenade running alongside a waterway is very good.
If you take a short stroll, you can get to the plateau area.
If you look up, you’ll see windmills spinning as they generate electricity.
The electricity generated here supplies the town and is environmentally friendly.91% of the area is surrounded by forest, and the maximum altitude is 1455 meters. People call it "the town above the clouds".

Kengo Kuma Architecture
The best place in the world to experience Kengo Kuma’s architecture.
In Yusuhara there are many examples of the work of renowned architect Kengo Kuma, including a library and a town plaza. In fact, the largest number of Kengo Kuma buildings in the world are situated here and, currently, a new hotel and roadside station are under construction. There is also a wooden playhouse, Yusuhara-za, which Kuma says was the initial inspiration for his wooden architecture.

Nature
Untouched nature that heals the mindand body.
91% of Yusuhara is forested and the town is surrounded by a natural richness that is unimaginable in the city. The 3km long Kubotani ‘Therapy Road’, which extends along the waterway, is excellent for forest bathing. A line of windmills for power generation can be seen on the plateau area, and cows graze leisurely on the karst from spring to autumn.

History・Culture
A 1100 year history and culture, and the origins of the Meiji Restoration.
Here in Yusuhara, there are 1100 years of history. About 150 years ago, at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Ryoma Sakamoto and his comrades passed through here as they fled the Tosa Domain, embarking on a saga which led ultimately to the Meiji Restoration.
Tsunoyama kagura, a traditional dance which embodies the history and culture of Yusuhara, is the pride of the townspeople.
